Bluvera Water provides NAFDAC-approved sachet water in Lagos, tackling water scarcity with clean, affordable, and reliable drinking water solutions.
Lagos is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world and the most populous city in Africa, with an estimated population of over 17.5 million people (World Population Review, 2023). Daily water demand in Lagos State is estimated at 720 million gallons per day (MGD), with only 10% of its population having access to public water supply, and nearly 24% have access to adequate basic sanitation (Water Aid 2023; Daramola et al., 2023). The currently installed water production capacity is only 210 million gallons per day, falling short of demand and leaving a significant gap of over 500 MGD. This challenging situation is attributed to Lagos’s rapid population growth, driven by the continuous influx of people into the city. Notable waterworks in the state include Adiyan Waterworks with a designed capacity of 70 million gallons per day (MGD), Iju Waterworks (45 MGD), and Ishasi Waterworks (4 MGD). Additionally, there are 51 mini and micro waterworks in Lagos State ranging from 1 MGD to 2 MGD. Limited access to water has forced residents to depend on non-public water sources such as boreholes, wells, and water vendors, whose supply is plagued by exorbitant prices, low quality, and unregulated services. Such water sources are often characterized by a lot of health challenges due to their inability to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standards (Lagos Water, 2023). Preliminary consultations with stakeholders revealed that water crises cut across low-, medium-, and high-density areas in Lagos State; however, the impact is more felt in high-density areas such as Ojota, Ketu, Oworonshoki, Gbagada, Isheri, Omole Phase 1, Magodo, Opebi, Oregun, Alausa, Allen and Awolowo Way, MKO Garden, Orile, Ajegunle, Ikoyi, etc. The challenge is heightened by the aging infrastructures.
Though National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), a Nigerian federal regulatory agency, is trying their best to regulate the water-producing industry for qualitative products. Through NAFDAC’s stringent vetting, inspection, standardization, and approval process, the agency’s effort is still being thwarted by the excessive water demand market. The supply of quality and clean drinking water is short due to overpopulation in the city, thus allowing room for unlicensed pure water producers to operate with impunity in the market. Bluvera Water, a subsidiary of Pristine Global Harvest Limited, is an approved, registered, and licensed agency by the NAFDAC under the product license number (??????). Bluvera Water is located in the Odo-Nla area of the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State. Ikorodu LGA has a total population of about 535,811 people. Bluvera Water is setting a first-year supply goal of 5% market share (26,790 packets—1 pack contains 20 units of 50 cl sachet water) per month and a second-year goal of 10% market share (53,581 packets per month) of sales of our Bluvera Water. Of course, operating outside the Ikorodu area is another opportunity that will be explored, as it is bound to open more doors of sales for our product. Our sales representative and marketing representatives shall be networking with eateries, kitchens, fast food agencies, individual household consumers, and schools to promote our products. Opening the possibilities of sales to reach areas like the Ojota area or Somolu LGA will also help to boost more sales opportunities for the company.
